Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.
Why Near North Side Homeowners Choose HeatShield Chimney Cleaning
HeatShield service in Near North Side means more than sweeping out soot. We service and repair HeatShield resurfacing systems on the vintage rowhouses and greystones that define this part of Chicago, where flues run through shared party walls and rooftop access is the only way in. As an independent HeatShield service provider, we work with the product every season and know exactly how it behaves after a few brutal lake-effect winters. We’re not authorized or endorsed by HeatShield. We simply know the system inside and out, and we use it where it makes sense. Call (833) 589-7835 for service on the Near North Side.
Most chimneys here aren’t the suburban brick stacks people picture. They’re the interior and rear masonry flues of 1870s-to-1920s rowhouses and greystones, many accessed from shared flat roofs and parapets. HeatShield in Chicago Loop and nearby neighborhoods gets specified on these flues because it restores a clay tile liner without a full teardown. But it has to survive freeze-thaw cycles that hammer exposed brick crowns, plus the damp, sooty buildup that comes with heavy heating-season use. That’s the work we do.
Why Trust Sandstone Chimney Sweep for Your HeatShield Chimney Cleaning?
There are sweep companies that clean a flue and hand you an invoice. Then there are companies that actually understand the material they’re working with. Norm Sobieski, owner of Sandstone Chimney Sweep, learned the mechanical side of this trade through the HVAC and building systems program at Truman College, then spent years doing residential chimney work across Chicago’s northwest neighborhoods before starting this company. He grew up in Albany Park watching his grandfather tend a coal-converted fireplace every winter, and our crew now handles HeatShield repair in Lincoln Park and across the north side. That background explains how we approach a HeatShield system: as a mechanical assembly, not a mystery.
When we inspect or clean a flue that’s been resurfaced with HeatShield, we check the same things a materials engineer would. Did the original application bond properly at the smoke chamber transition? Is the TherMix insulation still attached to the flue wall, or has it separated from repeated freeze-thaw movement? Has CrownSeal peeled back at the edges, letting water track behind the coating? These are the failure patterns we see on Near North Side chimneys, and they’re not covered in the manufacturer’s basic installation literature. We find them because we look for them. And because we’re the same crew that repairs what we find, there’s no gap between diagnosis and fix.
We also use genuine HeatShield components when we repair a system: the resurfacing mix, the primer, the crown coating. Aftermarket substitutes rarely match the adhesion and thermal properties needed for a lasting repair in Chicago’s climate. That matters on a Near North Side rooftop where the crown takes direct lake wind and every freeze cycle works on hairline cracks.

Common HeatShield Chimney Cleaning Problems We Fix in Near North Side
- TherMix insulation separating from the flue wall. We see this most often on exterior and rear chimney stacks where freeze-thaw cycles work against the bond. The insulation crumbles away in sections, leaving the original clay tile exposed and collecting creosote. You won’t see this from the firebox. You’ll notice it as deteriorating draft and more soot than usual during a cleaning.
- FireGuard delaminating at the damper or smoke chamber transition. This is the classic improper-prep failure. If the surface wasn’t cleaned and primed correctly before the FireGuard resurfacing went on, moisture gets behind the material and it starts to lift. On Near North Side rowhouses, where the damper assembly often sits in a tight, awkward pocket, this transition zone gets skipped. We clean it, prep it properly, and reapply.
- CrownSeal cracking and peeling over a wet or dirty crown. CrownSeal is a good product, but it will not save a crown that was sealed over damp, dirty mortar. Water tracks behind the coating, freeze cycles do the rest, and the coating peels back in sheets. We remove the failed material, dry and clean the crown, and recoat only when conditions are right. Sometimes that means waiting a day. Rushing this is why the first application failed.
- FlueGuard liner joints pulling apart at elbows or offsets. HeatShield FlueGuard is a jointed stainless system, and on Near North Side chimneys with tight offsets in attached buildings, thermal expansion works the joints loose over time. When a joint gaps, creosote and moisture bypass the liner and collect in the cavity behind it. During cleaning, we check for exactly this.
- Glazed creosote over a failed resurfacing layer. Once a HeatShield layer fails and raw clay tile is exposed, creosote glazes onto the tile surface quickly under heating-season use. This is a two-part fix: chemical or mechanical removal of the glaze, then proper surface prep and reapplication. We’ve handled this on more than a few greystones around Old Town.
HeatShield Parts & Our Repair-vs-Replace Approach
We stock genuine HeatShield resurfacing mix, primer, and crown coating for Near North Side service calls, which means a repair can often move from diagnosis to application in the same visit. That matters when you’re on a heating-season schedule and the flue has to work by the weekend. But we also know when to stop patching and start replacing.
If a HeatShield layer has failed over large sections of the flue, or the underlying clay tile is cracked and shifting, or the liner joints are pulling apart in multiple places, we’ll tell you that a full reline or rebuild is the better investment. We won’t sell you a resurfacing job that’s going to fail again in two winters. Your flue is a system, not just a pipe. The right call is sometimes a new liner and a new crown, done once, built to outlast the season.
For a straight assessment of what your HeatShield chimney actually needs, call (833) 589-7835. We’ll look at it from the roof, not from a brochure.
Our HeatShield Service Process – Step by Step
- 1
Diagnosis from the rooftop. On the Near North Side, that means ladders over shared flat roofs and parapets. We get eyes on the crown, the flue interior, and the smoke chamber. If it’s a TherMix or FireGuard system, we’re checking for the specific failure patterns we listed above.
- 2
Camera inspection and documented findings. You’ll see what we see. We run a camera down the flue and give you a straight explanation: this is failing, this is fine, this can wait. Nothing gets recommended without visual evidence you can look at yourself.
- 3
Repair or cleaning with genuine HeatShield components. If the job is resurfacing repair, we use the proper primer and mix, applied to a clean, dry surface. If it’s CrownSeal, the crown gets prepped correctly or not at all. Cutting corners on prep is the single biggest reason HeatShield repairs fail in Chicago’s climate.
- 4
Cure and test. HeatShield materials need proper curing time to bond correctly. We don’t rush it. After the application, we run draft and smoke tests to confirm the flue is pulling correctly before we leave the roof.
- 5
Warranty-safe documentation. We document the products used, the conditions at time of application, and the test results. If you ever need warranty support or a condition report, you’ll have a record.

AfterHeatShield Products We Service & Install in Near North Side
We service and install the full HeatShield line: FireGuard for resurfacing flue interiors, TherMix for insulation-grade resurfacing on exterior and rear chimney stacks, CrownSeal for crown coating and waterproofing, and FlueGuard jointed stainless liner systems. On the Near North Side, the two we work with most are TherMix, because of the exposed chimney stacks on vintage rowhouses, and CrownSeal, because rooftop crowns here take a beating from lake-effect weather. We keep the core materials on the truck for most service calls.
Our crew was called to a greystone near Old Town where the homeowner had a HeatShield TherMix resurfacing applied a few years back. We found the insulation had crumbled away from the flue wall in two sections, leaving the original clay tile exposed and glazed with creosote. We removed the failed material, cleaned the flue thoroughly, and re-applied a fresh HeatShield resurfacing system with proper primer and curing, then checked the crown and found minor cracking that we sealed with CrownSeal. The homeowner now has a smooth, insulated flue that is drawing properly and ready for the heating season.
We Also Service These Brands
HeatShield is one system among several we work with. We also service and install DuraFlex stainless liner systems and Gelco chimney products, and we’ll recommend whichever material is actually right for your flue in Near North Side conditions. A clean flue isn’t a luxury – it’s just what a working fireplace requires. Sometimes that’s HeatShield. Sometimes it’s a different system entirely.
FAQs – HeatShield Chimney Cleaning Service in Near North Side
No. We are an independent HeatShield service provider. We install and service HeatShield products because they work well in Chicago’s climate, but we have no manufacturer authorization, sponsorship, or endorsement. We believe that independence actually works in your favor: we recommend what’s best for your flue, not what we’re obligated to push.
HeatShield can hold up well in the Near North Side climate, but only when the surface prep is done correctly and the system is applied to a clean, dry flue. The freeze-thaw failures we see are almost always traceable to moisture intrusion at the crown, improper primer application, or surface contamination at the time of coating. When the prep is right, the material bonds and endures. When it’s rushed, it fails at the seams. Call (833) 589-7835 if you want us to inspect yours from the roof.
No. Not successfully. HeatShield resurfacing needs a clean, porous surface to bond. Glazed creosote is essentially a hard, shiny, non-porous coating, and applying resurfacing material over it will fail. The glaze has to be removed first, through chemical treatment or mechanical cleaning, then the surface has to be dried and primed. This is one of the most common reasons a DIY or rushed HeatShield application fails within two years. If you suspect glazed creosote in your flue, call (833) 589-7835 and we’ll camera the flue and tell you exactly what’s there.
FireGuard is a resurfacing system designed to restore the inner surface of a flue that has cracked, spalled, or deteriorated clay tiles. It’s a structural resurfacing layer. TherMix is an insulated version of that same concept, with added thermal properties for exterior or rear chimney stacks that face heavy temperature swings. On the Near North Side, where chimneys run up the outside walls of rowhouses and greystones, we often specify TherMix over FireGuard because of the freeze-thaw stress. Both use the same application principles and both fail the same way when prep is skipped.
CrownSeal can fill and seal hairline cracks, yes. But it will not fix a crown that’s wet, dirty, or structurally compromised. The crown has to be cleaned, dried, and prepared before CrownSeal goes on. If the cracks are wide or the crown is spalling badly, a crown rebuild is the honest answer. We’ll tell you which one you need after looking at it, not before.
A standard HeatShield chimney cleaning on the Near North Side typically runs between $180 and $340 depending on flue condition, roof access, and whether we’re cleaning a resurfaced flue or a lined flue with a jointed system. Resurfacing repair work, like TherMix or FireGuard reapplication, is priced per job after a camera inspection. A straight cleaning is the first step: we see the flue from the inside, then we give you a real number for anything else. Call (833) 589-7835 for a free estimate and we’ll come out to the rooftop and look.
