Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.
DuraFlex Chimney Cleaning in Chicago Lawn, IL | Sandstone Chimney Sweep
We provide independent DuraFlex chimney cleaning and repair service across Chicago Lawn’s brick two-flats and bungalows. What makes our DuraFlex work different here is that we know how these liners behave inside century-old shared stacks, where multiple flues serve separate units and freeze-thaw winters chew at terminations. Call Norm Sobieski and the Sandstone team at (833) 589-7835 for a free estimate.
We’re not authorized or sponsored by DuraFlex, and we don’t pretend to be. We recommend their components when the existing system actually calls for them. That’s the whole point of our DuraFlex sales & service approach, and the reason we’ve become the crew Chicago Lawn homeowners call when a liner question comes up on Kedzie or 63rd Street.
Why Chicago Lawn Residents Choose Us for DuraFlex Service
We’ve relined, re-terminated, and swept DuraFlex systems across this neighborhood long enough to know the difference between a liner that needs cleaning and one that needs a section replaced. That distinction matters on Chicago Lawn’s blocks, where a flexible stainless liner is often hidden inside an original clay tile flue from 1925, and the homeowner may not even know it’s there. Our Chicago Lawn service area coverage means we’re already working in your ZIP code regularly, not driving in from forty minutes away when a sweep pops up on the calendar.
Norm Sobieski grew up on the North Side and learned building systems at Truman College before spending years on residential chimney work across the city’s brick housing stock. He started Sandstone because he got tired of watching sweep crews hand over an invoice without explaining what they actually saw in the flue. When we fit genuine DuraFlex liner components, it’s because the existing system is DuraFlex and the parts belong together. When the liner is sound, we clean it, re-terminate it, and tell you it didn’t need more than that.

Common DuraFlex Chimney Cleaning Problems We Solve in Chicago Lawn
- Creosote and soot packed into flexible liner corrugations. DuraFlex flexible liners have ridges and valleys by design, and those valleys collect material fast when a gas or wood appliance went years without an annual sweep. We see this constantly in Chicago Lawn two-flats where the liner was installed during a furnace swap and nobody told the owner it existed. A standard sweep doesn’t get into those corrugation valleys. Ours does, which is why we use a rotary whip system sized to the liner diameter rather than a flat brush that skims the surface.
- Top plates and terminations corroded loose by Chicago’s freeze-thaw cycle. The cap and top plate sit exposed through every winter melt-and-refreeze, plus wind-driven snow off the lake. When the termination fails, meltwater runs down between the liner and the original clay tile, soaking the masonry from the inside. On Chicago Lawn’s 1910s and 1920s chimneys, that water attacks mortar that’s already soft, and the damage compounds within a season or two.
- Deteriorated or missing insulation wrap on older DuraFlex installs. The wrap isn’t a luxury item. Without it, the liner runs cold, flue gases condense, and the stainless rusts from the outside in. We find liners where the insulation blanket has simply disintegrated after fifteen or twenty winters, leaving bare stainless against a damp clay tile. At that point the liner isn’t functioning as a liner anymore.
- Pulled-apart liner connections at the appliance collar or tee. When a furnace or water heater gets swapped, the new appliance rarely lines up exactly with the old connection. If the installer wasn’t careful, you get a misaligned joint and exhaust gases leaking into the chase. On a shared two-flat stack, that leak can push carbon monoxide toward the wrong unit. We fix the connection and run a smoke test to confirm the path is clean.
- Perforated stainless from years of condensation without proper ventilation. DuraFlex liners hold up well when installed correctly, but a liner that runs cold because the wrap is gone or the flue is oversized will eventually rust through. When our camera shows perforation, we say so plainly, and we replace the section or the liner rather than cleaning around a hole.
DuraFlex Service in Chicago Lawn: What Local Conditions Mean for Your Equipment
Here’s the piece of this that a generic DuraFlex page never gets: Chicago Lawn’s two-flats and three-flats from the 1910s through 1930s often share one exterior chimney stack with multiple flues serving separate furnaces and water heaters. That means when you call us about the DuraFlex liner on your first-floor furnace, we don’t just scan that flue. We scan every flue in the stack, because the odds of a disconnected appliance, cross-contaminated exhaust, or a second liner that’s failing are higher here than anywhere else in the city. On blocks off South Kedzie Avenue, we’ve found flues still venting water heaters that were disconnected a decade ago, and DuraFlex liners whose terminations were never properly sealed against the shared crown.
That’s not an upsell. It’s a Level 2 inspection on a stack where the failure modes are shared, not isolated. A chimney in suburban Naperville with one fireplace doesn’t present that risk. A Chicago Lawn two-flat with three flues in one brick column does, and ignoring two of them because you only called about one is how you miss the problem that actually hurts somebody.
DuraFlex Models & Products We Service in Chicago Lawn
We work on the full DuraFlex lineup you’ll find in Chicago Lawn chimneys, including DuraFlex Pro flexible stainless relining kits, DuraFlex SW smooth-wall flexible liner systems, DuraFlex rigid stainless liner sections, and the matching insulation blankets and top-plate or termination kits. When a system is DuraFlex, we fit genuine DuraFlex liner, tee, top-plate, and termination components. For caps and hardware where an OEM match adds cost without adding function, we’ll tell you and use a quality aftermarket piece instead. The point is to put the right material on the chimney, not to pad a parts invoice.
The local angle: we stock what Chicago Lawn homes actually need, which means DuraFlex flexible liner sections in the diameters common to 1920s furnace flues, plus top plates sized for the wide brick crowns on these bungalows. That saves you wait time when a repair can’t be put off.

AfterDuraFlex Service Pricing in Chicago Lawn
A DuraFlex chimney cleaning in Chicago Lawn typically runs $165 to $250 for a standard sweep of one flue. If the liner’s corrugations are heavily packed or we need to do a longer rotary cleaning, expect the higher end. A Level 2 camera inspection adds $150 to $225, and labor for terminations, top plates, or liner section replacement depends entirely on what the scan shows. We give you a firm price before work starts, and the estimate is free. The short version: if the liner is sound, you pay for a sweep. If it isn’t, we have camera evidence you can look at with us. Call (833) 589-7835 for an exact quote, and don’t be surprised if the answer is that you don’t need half of what a pressure outfit told you.

FAQs – DuraFlex Chimney Cleaning in Chicago Lawn
My Chicago Lawn two-flat has one chimney stack but two furnaces – does a DuraFlex liner cover both?
No. Each flue needs its own liner, sized to the appliance it serves. In a shared stack from the 1920s, you might have one flue with a DuraFlex liner and another that’s still original clay tile or completely unlined. That’s exactly why we scan every flue in the stack when we’re called for one. If you’re unsure what you have, call (833) 589-7835 and we’ll put a camera down each one and show you.
How do I know if the DuraFlex liner in my bungalow is still good after all these freeze-thaw winters?
The only way to know is a Level 2 camera inspection. Freeze-thaw damage usually shows up first at the top: a corroded cap, a loose top plate, or water staining on the crown below the termination. But rust and perforation inside the liner can hide for years. If your bungalow’s liner is more than fifteen years old, or you’ve had furnace work done since it was installed, it’s worth a look. Estimates are free at (833) 589-7835.
Can you put a multi-flue cap on my century-old exterior chimney instead of just a standard cap?
Yes. Chicago Lawn chimneys with two or three flues in one stack are exactly where a multi-flue cap makes sense. It seals the whole crown and keeps rain, snow, and animals out of every flue at once, which a standard cap on one flue doesn’t do. We size the cap to the existing crown and install it over the terminations.
The mortar on my chimney is spalling and crumbling – does that have to be fixed before a DuraFlex reline?
Usually, yes. If the mortar joints are failing, moisture is getting into the chimney structure, and any new liner is going to sit inside a chimney that’s letting water in. We repoint the masonry first, seal the crown, and then install the liner so it isn’t compromised from day one. On brick chimneys this old, we treat the repair order as masonry first, liner second.
Is a DuraFlex reline needed on a gas furnace flue in a 1920s Chicago Lawn walk-up, or can you just sweep it?
It depends on what the camera shows. A gas flue from the 1920s likely has no liner at all, or a deteriorated clay tile that’s spalling. If the flue is intact, a sweep and Level 2 inspection may be enough. If it’s cracked, perforated, or unlined, a DuraFlex liner is the honest fix. We won’t sell you a reline you don’t need, and we’ll show you the scan that either way. Call (833) 589-7835 for a straight answer.
