Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.
DuraFlex Chimney Cleaning in Berkeley, IL | Sandstone Chimney Sweep
We provide independent DuraFlex repair in Bellwood and chimney cleaning and repair service throughout Berkeley, Illinois, ZIP 60163. The one thing that sets our DuraFlex work apart here is that we know exactly how same-builder post-war bungalows and Tollway-side grit affect these liners, so we catch failures other crews miss. We’re Norm Sobieski’s team at Sandstone Chimney Sweep, and we’ve been inside enough Berkeley flues to know what a DuraFlex liner should sound like when a brush goes through it. Call (833) 589-7835 for a free estimate.
Why Berkeley Residents Choose Us for DuraFlex Service
DuraFlex liners show up in a lot of Berkeley chimneys, particularly in bungalows where the original clay tile finally cracked and someone did the right thing by relining. We work with DuraFlex sales & service parts every week, not once a season. That matters when a homeowner calls with a smoky fireplace in October and we can identify a failed twist-lock joint over the phone before we even arrive.
We’re an independent DuraFlex service provider, plain and simple. No dealer badge, no manufacturer authorization implied. We sell DuraFlex on how it performs in the field, not on a logo. Norm Sobieski grew up in Albany Park and learned building systems at Truman College before spending years working residential chimneys across Chicago’s northwest neighborhoods. That background means we approach every Berkeley flue as a system, not a pipe that just needs a quick sweep. When we find a problem we can fix, we fix it. We find it, we fix it. If it’s beyond our scope, we tell you that too, straight.

Common DuraFlex Chimney Cleaning Problems We Solve in Berkeley
- Creosote packing at the offset. Many Berkeley bungalows have a flue offset where the chimney jogs to meet a second-floor or attic wall line. Flexible DuraFlex liners follow that offset, and creosote builds fastest right there. We sweep those offsets with the right brush for the liner, not a rod jammed through. A standard 6-inch round brush with poly bristles handles most, but oval and rectangle liners need care so we don’t catch a twist-lock seam and open it.
- Failed bottom-section liner from wet stove runs. Berkeley saw a wave of 1960s additions and enclosed wood-burning stoves. Many of those stoves run cool and wet, and the bottom flue section on a DuraFlex liner is where condensate pools. We see corrosion pinholes there more than anywhere else. We’ll scope it, show you the camera image, and tell you if it’s a patch job or a replacement section. We don’t patch corroded liner. It’s either sound end to end or it gets replaced.
- Ovaled liner rubbing a cracked tile. When a previous crew pulled a flexible DuraFlex liner through a clay flue with a shifted joint, the liner often survives but gets crushed or kinked at the offset. The ovaled section then leans on a cracked tile and rubs every time the stove heats and cools. You’ll hear it, or you’ll smell smoke behind the surround. We pull the liner, repair the flue, and repull with a guide so it seats correctly.
- Twist-lock joint separation from bad sweeping. Re-sweeping a DuraFlex liner with the wrong brush or a rod driven against a seam will loosen twist-lock joints. Once a joint opens, smoke leaks behind the surround, sometimes into wall cavities. We reseat joints as part of our sweep when we find them loose, and we’ll tell you if the liner needs a full reset.
- Top-plate and cap corrosion on the east side. Blocks closest to the Tri-State Tollway take road salt and diesel grit all winter. DuraFlex stainless terminations there fail years earlier than on quieter village streets. We replace top plates and caps with genuine DuraFlex components because the UL listing depends on the matched system.
DuraFlex Service in Berkeley: What Local Conditions Mean for Your Equipment
Berkeley is a small village of around 5,000 people in ZIP 60163, and one thing we notice after a few years of sweeping here is that the same handful of builders put up most of the 1950s through 1970s bungalows. That means the clay flues on a single block are nearly identical in size and offset. We’ll often pull a liner kit sized for one house and find it fits the neighbor’s chimney next door. It makes our work faster, and it makes same-builder block bookings a smart move for neighbors. But the real information-gain for DuraFlex owners in Berkeley and DuraFlex repair in Stone Park is the Tollway factor. The east-side blocks, the ones within a few hundred yards of the expressway, get a constant drift of salt spray and diesel exhaust through the cold months. That film settles on caps, top plates, and exposed stainless terminations. Then freeze-thaw cycles work it into the seams. A DuraFlex cap that would last 20 years on a quiet village street might need replacement in 10 or 12 on the Tollway side. We see it constantly. That’s why our inspections on the east side always include a hard look at the top plate and cap, even when the liner below looks fine.
DuraFlex Models & Products We Service in Berkeley
We service the full residential DuraFlex line you’re likely to find in Berkeley homes. That includes DuraFlex SW Residential, the single-wall twist-lock stainless liner kit; DuraFlex Pro and ProFlex, the double-wall insulated flexible liners; DuraFlex Oval and Rectangle flexible liners for tight or offset flues; and the rigid stainless sections used as the top run above a flexible liner.
When we repair, we use genuine DuraFlex components for anything structural: liner sections, top plates, and terminations. The UL listing depends on the whole matched system, and aftermarket top plates or adapters void it. For sweeps, brushes, and caps, we buy quality aftermarket where it genuinely fits the flue. We stock common DuraFlex components locally so DuraFlex repair in Northlake and Berkeley turnaround doesn’t wait on a distributor order.

FAQs – DuraFlex Chimney Cleaning in Berkeley
If the liner is inside an existing masonry chimney, the single-wall SW kit usually meets code, but an insulated Pro liner drafts better in Berkeley’s cold winters and prevents the condensate that rots liners from the inside. If that clay tile is cracked, spalled, or has offset joints, the insulated Pro is the safer choice. Bring us the flue size and we’ll tell you what actually fits. Call (833) 589-7835 and we’ll scope it for free.
Road salt, diesel grit, and the freeze-thaw cycling that follows hit east-side Berkeley chimneys harder than those on quiet village streets. Salt spray gets into stainless terminations and works the seams until water gets down the annulus. We replace caps and top plates on the Tollway side years earlier than on the west end. If you live east of, say, the tracks or within sight of the expressway, have the cap checked this fall.
That smoky smell in summer is usually a cool, wet stove. The stove’s flue runs cool, condensate pools in the bottom section of the liner, and the moisture carries creosote odor back into the room. We see this on Berkeley’s enclosed stove installs all the time. It may just need a sweep and a damper adjustment, or the bottom liner section may have pinholed. We’ll scope it and show you the image. Call (833) 589-7835 for an inspection.
Yes. We use the right brush for the liner shape and we never drive a rod against a seam. Twist-lock joints are the weak point on DuraFlex SW liners, so we’re careful at every offset. If we find a joint already loose, we’ll reseat it during the sweep.
Often yes. Berkeley’s same-builder blocks have flues nearly identical in size and offset, so if we sized a kit for your neighbor’s bungalow, chances are it fits yours. We’ll verify with a camera scope before we pull anything. Call (833) 589-7835 and we’ll check your flue against the block.
