Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.
DuraFlex Chimney Cleaning in Winnetka, IL | Sandstone Chimney Sweep
We provide independent DuraFlex service across Winnetka, from cleaning stainless liner systems to replacing failed caps and top plates. The thing that sets our DuraFlex work apart here is knowing how Lake Michigan freeze-thaw cycles work against 1880 – 1940 masonry chimneys, because that’s where most liner problems in Winnetka start. If you need DuraFlex inspection or repair, call (833) 589-7835 and we’ll tell you what’s actually going on before quoting anything.
Why Winnetka Residents Choose Us for DuraFlex Service
DuraFlex liners live inside chimneys that were built long before stainless venting existed. Most Winnetka chimneys we open are original clay tile flues from the 1920s, sometimes the 1890s. Installing and maintaining a DuraFlex system in that kind of structure isn’t a generic skill. We re-seat loose top plates, replace corroded caps, and clean flexible sections without kinking them against old tile. Norm Sobieski started Sandstone after years of residential work across the North Side, and he’s been clear from day one: we’re an independent contractor, not a DuraFlex dealer. That means the recommendation you get is based on what your flue actually needs, not what we’re incentivized to sell.
Our crews know Winnetka service area requirements well enough to work with the village’s preservation expectations. When a chimney needs repair, the exterior has to stay right. DuraFlex gives us a way to upgrade the liner without touching the brick face. That matters here more than almost anywhere else on the North Shore.
Styles & brands we work with

Common DuraFlex Chimney Cleaning Problems We Solve in Winnetka
- Top plates pulling loose during freeze-thaw cycles. Winnetka winters alternate between snow and thaw enough that masonry expands and contracts through the season. We see DuraFlex top plates that were sealed tight in October but have shifted by March, letting meltwater run behind the insulation wrap and down toward the firebox.
- Corrosion pitting at the liner base from condensate pooling. In Winnetka homes where an old boiler or water heater shares the DuraFlex flue, we find stainless pitting where acidic condensate sits above a mis-sloped appliance connection. It’s a slow failure that cleaning alone won’t fix, but it shows up clearly during a Level 2 inspection.
- Crushed or kinked flexible sections from tight original installs. Many Winnetka chimneys from the 1920s have narrow, offset clay tile flues. A DuraFlex flexible liner forced through those offsets can kink. We see this often in Hubbard Woods and the older streets near the lake. The liner still passes a visual, but airflow is compromised.
- Unlisted or wrong-size caps letting water in during summer. Winnetka’s humid summers mean unused fireplaces stay damp. If a cap or top plate was improvised rather than matched to the DuraFlex system, rain and snow melt get in, mix with creosote, and you get that musty odor from the firebox in August.
- Insulation wrap degradation on exterior-exposed sections. Chimneys that run up the outside wall of a Winnetka home, rather than through the center, put liner insulation through bigger temperature swings. We’ve pulled wrap that’s delaminated and letting the liner sweat, which accelerates internal corrosion.
DuraFlex Service in Winnetka: What Local Conditions Mean for Your Equipment
Winnetka’s housing stock and its geography are inseparable when it comes to DuraFlex work. The village is full of large single-family homes built between 1880 and 1940, most of them masonry, most still standing on original clay tile flues. The lake moderates temperatures in a way that sounds gentle but causes genuine stress. You get snow, then a thaw, then a hard freeze, and the water that found its way into a hairline masonry crack expands. A DuraFlex liner may be stainless and flexible, but it’s still installed inside a structure that moves. We inspect liners differently here because we expect the chimney around them to be doing more work than it would in, say, our Glenview DuraFlex service area or Skokie.
DuraFlex Models & Products We Service in Winnetka
We service DuraFlex SW smooth-wall flexible liner kits, DuraFlex Pro flexible relining systems, rigid stainless sections, and the full set of component parts from top plates and caps to tees and insulation wrap. When a part fails, our default is a genuine DuraFlex replacement so the system stays a matched assembly. Where the honest call is an aftermarket masonry or damper part, we say so and keep the cost honest too. We carry common DuraFlex components in our truck stock for faster Winnetka turnaround, and anything else we can source within days.

AfterDuraFlex Service Pricing in Winnetka
Most DuraFlex cleaning and inspection visits in Winnetka land between $225 and $450 depending on liner type, chimney height, and whether we’re also doing a Level 2 inspection. Full relines run higher because the work includes demolition of the original clay tile flue and installation of the new system. A free estimate includes a clevis-level look at what’s wrong, measured against what genuinely needs doing now versus what can wait. If you want numbers, call (833) 589-7835 and we’ll walk the job with you before you sign anything.

FAQs – DuraFlex Chimney Cleaning in Winnetka
If your chimney has an exterior cleanout door at grade level, we can often do the entire job from outside, which keeps soot and dust out of your living space. In neighborhoods like Hubbard Woods, those doors are frequently buried under landscaping or snow, so we dig them out as part of the job — the same approach we take on our Wilmette DuraFlex service calls.
Water usually gets in around the top plate, the cap, or the crown, not through the liner itself. A stainless liner is watertight along its length, but if the top plate shifts during a freeze-thaw cycle or the cap doesn’t match the system, rainwater runs down the outside of the liner and into the flue. We trace the entry point, re-seat what’s still sound, and replace what isn’t.
We can. Our standard Level 2 inspection uses a camera to look down the liner and the surrounding flue without touching the original clay tile. That’s how we identify tile cracks behind a DuraFlex liner, which matters because the liner depends on that outer structure for support. Call (833) 589-7835 to schedule an inspection.
Yes, when it’s been installed as a listed matched assembly and the liner runs continuously from the appliance to the cap. The common issues we find in Winnetka are partial liners that stop short of the top, or liners sized wrong for the flue. Those are correctable without great expense, but they should be corrected before you burn the next season.
We do. While DuraFlex is one of the product lines we work with most, we regularly service systems built with other industry-standard liners, and we also work with HeatShield, Gelco, Olympia Chimney, and Copperfield. The fix starts with the inspection; the liner you have is less important than whether it’s still doing its job. For a quote on any liner brand, call (833) 589-7835.
