Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.
DuraFlex Chimney Cleaning in Chicago, IL | Sandstone Chimney Sweep
We provide independent DuraFlex chimney cleaning and repair across Chicago, and the one thing that shapes our DuraFlex work here more than anything else is the shared masonry stack. Thousands of Chicago’s brick two- and three-flats run multiple flues through a single chimney, so a DuraFlex liner in one flue is rarely an isolated system. Our job is to clean and inspect that liner with the rest of the stack in mind, because what happens in the neighboring flue affects your crown, your watertightness, and your liner’s lifespan. Call (833) 589-7835 for a free estimate on DuraFlex service anywhere in Chicago.
Sandstone Chimney Sweep works exclusively with DuraFlex stainless flex liner systems, and we own that expertise through thousands of hours of hands-on work in Chicago’s older brick housing stock. We are an independent provider, not authorized or certified by DuraFlex, and we say so plainly. What we offer is simple: we know how these liners seat, how they fail, and how they interact with old terra-cotta flues. Norm Sobieski, our owner, learned the mechanical side of this trade through the HVAC and building systems program at Truman College on the North Side, then spent years doing residential chimney work across Chicago’s northwest neighborhoods before starting Sandstone. He still lives in Albany Park, not far from the Lawrence Avenue corridor, and he approaches every shared-stack job the way his grandfather approached a coal-converted fireplace: carefully, honestly, and with no drama. Why Chicago Residents Choose Us for DuraFlex Service
DuraFlex liners are not exotic equipment, but they are specification-grade equipment, and that distinction matters in Chicago. A smooth-wall or corrugated stainless liner installed into a 1920s terra-cotta flue behaves differently than the same liner inside a modern framed chimney. The ribs trap creosote. The clay tile spalls behind it. The crown moves with freeze-thaw. If the person cleaning your DuraFlex system doesn’t understand those interactions, they’re just brushing soot out of a pipe.
That’s where our local experience pays. We’ve worked on enough of Chicago’s two- and three-flat stacks to recognize the trouble signs before they become expensive problems. Our techs are trained on DuraFlex systems specifically, and we stock genuine DuraFlex components and compatible connectors and caps locally, so repair work doesn’t stall while parts cross state lines. We don’t swap in consumer-grade substitutes, and we don’t replace a liner that’s still sound. We clean, we scope, we tell you straight.

Common DuraFlex Chimney Cleaning Problems We Solve in Chicago
- Corrugated liner creosote packing in multi-flat stacks. Chicago’s two- and three-flat buildings often vent furnaces, water heaters, and wood fireplaces through the same masonry chimney. Corrugated DuraFlex liners trap creosote in their ribs faster than smooth-wall, and that buildup hides between the corrugations where a routine brush pass might miss it. In neighborhoods like Bridgeport or Pilsen, where shared stacks are common, an annual sweep that doesn’t address the ribs is incomplete.
- Freeze-thaw water intrusion rusting the outer wrap. Chicago winters cycle through hard freezes and thaws, and lake-effect moisture pushes into every crack in a chimney crown. When water reaches a DuraFlex liner, it rusts or pits the outer stainless wrap and can delaminate the insulation blanket on pre-wrapped kits. We find this often in spring, after a winter of slow leaks.
- Terra-cotta spalling against tight liners. Many Chicago homes, especially the 1920s greystones and worker’s cottages scattered across the South and West sides, still have original single-wythe clay-tile flues. When a DuraFlex liner was pulled through too tight or left uninsulated, the liner contacts spalling terra cotta, and the tile crumbles against it over repeated winters. The result is a liner that’s technically sound but surrounded by debris that blocks draft and accelerates wear.
- Failed top plate and appliance connector seals. Chicago’s lake-effect moisture and flue gas condensate find their way through even slight gaps at the top plate or appliance connector. When those seals fail, you get leaks at the liner joint and carbon monoxide odor complaints in the units below. This is a common call in the bungalow belt, where furnaces and water heaters share flue runs with old connectors.
- Crown compromise across shared stacks. In a multi-flat Chicago building, one failed liner in a neighbor’s flue can crack the shared crown or open the whole chimney to water. We scope and photograph every flue in the stack during a DuraFlex cleaning, because your liner’s health depends partly on what’s happening two courses above you.
DuraFlex Service in Chicago: What Local Conditions Mean for Your Equipment
Chicago’s shared stacks serving two to four flats mean a DuraFlex liner in one flue is often one of several in the same masonry chimney. We scope and photograph every flue in the stack during service, because a failed liner in a neighbor’s flue can compromise the crown and the whole chimney’s watertightness. That’s not true in a single-family suburb where each house owns its stack outright. Here, one service call can serve three households off the same chimney, and one neglected flue can undo the work you paid for in yours.
On a three-flat block in Bridgeport, our crew was called for a routine sweep and found a corrugated DuraFlex liner serving the first-floor furnace that had rusted through at a seam where the cap gasket had failed years before. We ran a Level 2 camera down every flue in the shared stack, replaced the failed section and cap, and re-sealed the appliance connector. Then we showed the two upstairs owners why their unlined clay flues were the next thing to address. That same job in a single-family house would have ended with the one liner. In Chicago, the stack is the system.
DuraFlex Models & Products We Service in Chicago
We service the full DuraFlex lineup you’ll find in Chicago chimneys: Stainless Steel Flexible Chimney Liner in its corrugated, single-wall form; Smooth-Wall Flexible Liner; the Insulated Liner Kit with its pre-wrapped blanket; and DuraFlex Top Plates, caps, and Appliance Connector Kits. We fit genuine DuraFlex liner components and connectors when a section is genuinely damaged. For caps and clamps where OEM is unavailable, we use quality aftermarket replacements that seat and seal correctly, nothing cosmetic. If a liner wall is sound but the insulation wrap is delaminating, we repair or re-seat it. If the liner is pitted through or the terra cotta has spalled around it, we tell you straight that a replacement run is the honest call.

AfterDuraFlex Service Pricing in Chicago
Chimney cleaning and inspection on a DuraFlex system in Chicago typically runs between $150 and $350, depending on the liner configuration, flue accessibility from the roof, building height, and whether we’re servicing one flue or multiple flues in a shared stack. Level 2 camera inspections generally add $100 to $250. Cap installation and replacement usually runs $150 to $450, including materials and sealing work. Chimney waterproofing with a quality masonry sealer typically costs $300 to $700, depending on brick surface area and prep work.
What drives cost here more than anything is the shared stack. A two-flat with two liners in one chimney costs more to service properly than a single-family home, because we inspect every flue. A free estimate tells you exactly what your stack needs, with no pressure and no vague line items. Call (833) 589-7835 for an exact quote, estimates are free.

FAQs – DuraFlex Chimney Cleaning in Chicago
Our Bridgeport three-flat shares one chimney stack – does a DuraFlex liner in one flue mean the others need attention too? Yes, in most cases the shared stack means every flue affects the others. A failed liner in a neighbor’s flue can crack the crown, open the whole chimney to water, and eventually compromise the flue liner you paid for. We scope and photograph every flue in a shared stack during service, and we recommend addressing problems we find in adjacent flues before they spread. Call (833) 589-7835 to schedule a full inspection of your stack.
Is a corrugated DuraFlex liner worse than smooth-wall for a Chicago wood-burning fireplace? A corrugated liner is not worse, but it does trap creosote in the ribs faster than a smooth-wall liner, especially with the cooler flue temperatures Chicago’s wood-burning fireplaces can produce. A thorough cleaning needs to work the ribs, not just sweep the center of the pipe. If your corrugated liner serves a frequently used wood fireplace, expect more frequent attention, and ask your sweep whether they use tools that actually reach between the ribs.
Why did our DuraFlex liner rust after one winter in a Pilsen greystone? In our experience, one winter of rust on a stainless liner almost always traces back to water. A cracked crown, failed flashing, or a bad top plate seal allows moisture into the liner’s outer wrap, and Chicago’s freeze-thaw cycles push that water into every gap. Insulated liners can delaminate when the wrap gets wet repeatedly. The fix is not just replacing the liner, it’s finding and sealing the water entry point.
Can a DuraFlex liner be installed in our original unlined clay tiles, or does the flue need rebuilding first? A DuraFlex liner can be installed in original clay tile flues, provided the terra cotta is intact enough to provide a stable channel. If the tile has spalled badly or collapsed, the flue may need partial rebuilding or at minimum a careful re-evaluation of clearances before liner installation. We won’t pull a liner through a flue that will just crumble against it. Inspect first, install second.
Do you carry DuraFlex parts for a cap replacement, or do we wait weeks for an order? We stock genuine DuraFlex components and compatible connectors and caps for fast turnaround in Chicago. If a specific DuraFlex part is not in our inventory, we can typically source compatible aftermarket components that seat and seal correctly, so you don’t wait through another Chicago winter with an open crown. Call (833) 589-7835 and describe what you need, we’ll tell you what we have on hand.
